What Can You Expect From P.A.L.S...?

The same as you would expect from any friendship; support, information that can help, a few laughs along the way - but with improved levels of fitness into the bargain

We know that some of the men who join P.A.L.S. may never have stepped inside a gym before, let alone take part in a fitness-based class, and that could put them off anything to do with the ‘f’ (fitness) word.

Which is why we’re different.

The exercise that many men did in their twenties might not work for them – or their body – now. But physical activity really can help manage their health after diagnosis with prostate cancer.

P.A.L.S. introduces survivors to new activities, which they might not have tried before, are fun, and most importantly which they can carry on with after they’ve finished the programme.

The programme will also cover specific elements including effective pelvic floor work, bone health and weight management as well as the importance of relaxation.

And  it provides forum for discussions regarding the importance of pacing, managing energy to meet daily needs, something that can help survivors to get the most out of life.

It’s not all work and no play. There’s a break during each session where there is a chance for a coffee and a catch up. Every so often, you’ll find a homemade cake might sneak in as well.

Every P.A.L.S. course runs for six weeks and each session lasts for two hours. We run in small groups with a maximum of twelve, in a relaxed, informal setting, often a hall or community centre.

Before joining, participants meet their teacher for a one-to-one chat about their diagnosis, health and current levels of activity.

This helps the instructors really get to know them – and means that the men taking part can feel a little less nervous about coming along for the first time.

Follow-ups are conducted with programme participants three and six months after they’ve completed the programme, to answer any questions and check in with how they’re getting on.

All of this means we can support survivors for the duration – whether they’re having treatment or managing their condition with surveillance. Because that’s just what good P.A.L.S. do.
